Our Story
At KopiLuwak.coffee, we understand the skepticism. The name “Kopi Luwak” often conjures images of controversy, ethical doubts, and overblown claims. It is precisely for this reason that we began our journey—not simply to sell a product, but to restore integrity to one of Indonesia’s most misunderstood coffee treasures.
Our story isn’t one of clever marketing; it’s one of deep-seated passion for coffee, respect for nature, and an unwavering commitment to transparency.

Our Roots: From Doubt to Conviction
Our journey began not in a boardroom, but amidst the lush coffee plantations of Indonesia where our founders grew up. For years, we heard the stories of Kopi Luwak—both the legendary and the troubling. We heard about its unique flavor profile and also of the industry’s wider problems with animal cruelty and fraud.
Frustration with this gap between the coffee’s potential and its tarnished reputation spurred us to action. We could not accept that a remarkable natural process had been hijacked by unethical practices. We therefore established a mission: to find, support, and exclusively offer Kopi Luwak that is 100% wild, ethical, and truly exceptional, and to show the world it can be done.
This required more than textbook knowledge; it demanded firsthand experience. We spent years on the ground, building relationships with small farming communities in Gayo, Kintamani, and Toraja. We didn’t just visit; we participated. We learned to recognize the tracks of wild civets, understood the challenge of harvesting their droppings from the vast forest floor, and observed directly how a wild luwak’s natural diet—consisting of the finest coffee cherries and other local fruits—creates a complexity of flavor that can never be replicated in a cage.
Our Philosophy: The Three Pillars
To address entrenched industry skepticism and build genuine trust, we built our business on three non-negotiable pillars:
100% Wild & Cage-Free (An Ethical Commitment)
We categorically reject Kopi Luwak from caged civets. Full stop. Our commitment to ethical and wild sourcing is the foundation of everything we do. We work directly with farming families who harvest the droppings from free-roaming civets on their land. This practice not only guarantees zero animal cruelty but also supports the conservation of the luwak’s natural habitat and provides a sustainable income for local communities. We are in the process of obtaining third-party certifications to independently verify these claims, as we believe verifiable proof is the only way forward.
Expertise from Bean to Cup (A Commitment to Quality)
Claims of quality without provable expertise are just marketing fluff. We have over 15 years of experience in specialty coffee procurement across the archipelago. Our meticulously harvested beans are then entrusted to our Master Roaster, Mr. Herry Setiawan, a certified Q-Grader with a passion for unlocking the most delicate flavor profiles from each bean. We don’t just say we have “expert roasters”; we proudly introduce the professionals whose expertise you can trust.
Radical Transparency (A Commitment to You)
Trust isn’t claimed; it’s earned. We recognize that in the past, our site failed to meet basic standards of accessibility and transparency, a shortcoming we have worked diligently to correct. Today, we are committed to radical transparency. We provide clear, accessible contact information, a comprehensive privacy policy, and are developing a traceability system that will allow you to trace your beans back to the plantation region where they were found. We openly discuss the challenges within the Kopi Luwak industry and transparently outline the steps we take to be part of the solution.
