Robusta Luwak

Robusta Luwak is a distinctive Indonesian coffee primarily cultivated on plantations in Sumatra (particularly Lampung), Java, and Bali. Its uniqueness stems from a natural process where the Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) selects and consumes the ripest coffee cherries.

Robusta Luwak Coffee

Robusta Luwak Coffee is primarily sourced from plantations in the lowland regions of Indonesia, notably Lampung, South Sumatra, and parts of Java, where Coffea canephora (Robusta) thrives.

Its uniqueness originates from the Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The animal selectively consumes only the ripest Robusta coffee cherries. During digestion, enzymes and gastric juices ferment the beans, altering their protein structure. This process, followed by thorough washing and roasting, reduces the characteristic bitterness and heavy body of Robusta, resulting in a smoother, less acidic cup with distinct earthy, woody, and chocolatey notes, devoid of the “burnt” taste sometimes associated with low-quality Robusta.

Authentic, ethically produced Robusta Luwak is wild-gathered, not from caged farms, making it rare. The specific terroir of the Indonesian islands and the unique fermentation impart a flavor profile unattainable by standard processing methods.

The Unique Process of Kopi Luwak

Luwak coffee or also known as kopi luwak, is a unique coffee made from the best arabica beans the pristine Gayo highlands can provide. This kind of coffee undergoes a natural process of the digestion of the wild free-roaming civets. Coming from the pristine mountains of  Central Aceh, Sumatra. This coffee is renowned as the most exclusive and expensive coffee in the world due to its unique production method.

The coffee beans are consumed by the civets, which after undergo natural fermentation in their digestive system, and then are excreted by the civets. While this can seem odd, however, it enhances the flavour profile of the kopi luwak. However, to ease your mind, every coffee bean undergoes strict processing, including thorough cleaning, outer layer removal, and carefully controlled roasting to ensure safety and hygiene.

It must be known that kopi luwak is not a specific coffee variety but rather a special kind of coffee processing method. Therefore, its taste profile is significantly influenced by the source of the beans, and the roasting technique is used to prepare this kind of coffee. We use beans from Aceh Gayo, a region known for producing the finest Kopi Luwak in Indonesia.
